What is Backpack?
Backpack is a privacy-first document vault for your iPhone. It stores all your important documents — passports, insurance policies, receipts, boarding passes, and more — in one place, organised automatically using on-device AI. No accounts, no cloud, no tracking.
How do I add documents?
There are several ways to add documents:
- Camera — scan a physical document
- Photo Library — import from your camera roll
- Files — import a PDF or image from the Files app
- Email — connect your Gmail or Outlook and Backpack will find document attachments for you
- Share Sheet — share a file from any app directly into Backpack
Do I need to create an account?
No. Backpack has no accounts, no sign-up, and no login. Everything is stored locally on your device. Just download and start adding documents.
What types of documents can I store?
Backpack automatically classifies documents into categories including passports, driving licences, visas, insurance policies, boarding passes, receipts, invoices, contracts, medical records, tax documents, certificates, property documents, and more. You can also create custom categories with Backpack Pro.
What is Ask Backpack?
Ask Backpack lets you ask natural language questions about your documents — for example, "When does my passport expire?" or "What's my policy number?" It uses Apple's on-device AI to find the answer from your stored documents, so your questions never leave your device.
Ask Backpack requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later with Apple Intelligence enabled.
How does the email integration work?
When you connect your Gmail or Outlook account, Backpack scans your inbox for emails with document attachments (like boarding passes, insurance policies, or receipts). You review what it finds and choose which documents to save. Backpack only has read-only access to your inbox, never sees your password, and never reads the body of your emails. You can disconnect at any time in Settings.
How do expiry reminders work?
Backpack automatically detects expiry dates on your documents (like passports or insurance policies) and tracks them in the Expiry tab. With Backpack Pro, you'll receive automatic reminders at 90 days, 30 days, and 7 days before a document expires — so you're never caught off guard.
Does Backpack work offline?
Yes. Since all your documents and data are stored locally on your device, Backpack works fully offline. The only feature that requires an internet connection is connecting your email to scan for documents.
Where is my data stored?
All your data is stored locally on your device in an encrypted app container protected by iOS. Backpack has no servers, no cloud storage, and no way to access your documents. Your data is included in your iCloud device backup if you have that enabled in iOS Settings, but Backpack itself does not use any cloud services.
Can I lock Backpack with Face ID?
Yes. You can enable biometric lock in Settings to require Face ID (or Touch ID) every time you open the app. You can also configure auto-lock to activate immediately, after 1 minute, or after 5 minutes of inactivity.
Is it safe to connect my email?
Yes. Backpack uses the official OAuth sign-in flows provided by Google and Microsoft. Your email password is never seen or stored by Backpack. Backpack only requests read-only access to your inbox — it cannot send emails, delete messages, or modify anything. The OAuth token is stored securely on your device and is never sent to any server. You can revoke access at any time.
How do I delete my data?
Since all data is stored on your device, you have complete control:
- Delete individual documents from within the app
- Use "Delete all documents" in Settings to clear everything
- Disconnect your email in Settings to revoke access
- Uninstall the app to remove all data
There is no account to delete and no server-side data.
What do I get with Backpack Pro?
Backpack Pro unlocks:
- Unlimited document storage (free tier allows 5)
- Unlimited Ask Backpack questions
- Unlimited email scans and new document notifications
- Automatic expiry reminders
- Document sharing and export
- Custom document categories
- Home screen Smart Access widget
Is Backpack Pro a subscription?
No. Backpack Pro is a one-time purchase. Pay once, keep all features forever — no recurring charges.
How do I restore my purchase?
If you've reinstalled the app or got a new device, go to Settings and tap "Restore Purchase". Your Pro access will be restored automatically through the App Store using the same Apple ID you purchased with.
Why can't I use Ask Backpack?
Ask Backpack requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later with Apple Intelligence enabled. If you have a compatible device, make sure Apple Intelligence is turned on in your iPhone's Settings under Apple Intelligence & Siri. If your device is busy with other tasks, Ask Backpack may be temporarily unavailable — try again in a moment.
A document was classified incorrectly. How do I fix it?
Open the document and tap the category label to reclassify it. You can choose from any of the built-in categories or create a custom one with Backpack Pro.
My email connection stopped working. What should I do?
Go to Settings, disconnect your email account, then reconnect it. This refreshes the authentication token. If the issue persists, check that Backpack still has access in your Google or Microsoft account security settings.
